Foo Fighters is an American rock band founded by multi-instrumentalist Dave Grohl, known as the former drummer of Nirvana. An important inspiration for this band is grunge. The band first performed in 1995. The Foo Fighters were formed after Nirvana disbanded following the death of Kurt Cobain. In 1995, Dave Grohl released a self-titled album under the name Foo Fighters, a collection of songs he wrote during his Nirvana period.
Dave played all the bass, guitar and drum parts himself for what he initially considered a solo project. He used the name 'Foo Fighters' rather than his own name because he did not want to capitalise on the attention surrounding Kurt Cobain's death. Dave Grohl himself expected to change the name later. By his own admission, he thinks it's "the dumbest band name ever". Foo Fighters was a commonly used term for UFOs during the Second World War. Only later did he form a band: bassist Nate Mendel, drummer William Goldsmith (both ex-Sunny Day Real Estate) and guitarist Pat Smear (ex-Germ, who provided Nirvana with a reinforcing guitar sound during the In Utero tour) gave the Foo Fighters a face.
In 2019, the Foo Fighters had no fewer than 9 songs in the Top2000.
