After a position as frontman of Orange Juice, Edwyn Collins decided it was time for a solo career. Despite numerous attempts to interest a record company, the Scot took matters into his own hands in a small studio run by a few die-hard Orange Juice fans. This resulted in his solo debut Hope And Despair. Six months later, Demon Records became interested and released the album two months after that.
After the albums Doctor Syntax (2002) and a compilation album in 2003, disaster struck. Collins suffered a stroke and had to undergo a risky operation after a second stroke. For a long time, he struggled with speaking and walking due to paralysis on the right side of his body. However, Edwyn managed to recover, and in 2007 the album Home Again was released. This album was recorded before his stroke but only completed after his recovery. The BBC made a documentary about his recovery: Edwyn Collins: Home Again.

Sunday Morning Classic
On Sunday 8 October 2023, it was Edwyn Collins' turn to take the stage on our Sunday Morning Classic podium with his album Gorgeous George.
In 1994, Edwyn Collins built his own studio and recorded his third album Gorgeous George there. The album contains his biggest hit: A Girl Like You. The single itself is based on the drum track of 1-2-3 by Len Barry from 1965. A Girl Like You also captures the vibe of that era. Additionally, it was accompanied by an avant-garde music video. The rest of this album is also well worth hearing. With this album, Edwyn creates a record that evokes the atmosphere of the 1970s. Also, listen to the strong opening track! His work with his previous band was generally more cheerful.
Here you also hear a greatly underrated guitarist. In terms of vocal tone, Edwyn could have been a brother of David Bowie.
