Long, very long before Jerney Kaagman was a judge on Idols (and not everyone’s favourite), she was the frontwoman of the Dutch band Earth and Fire. Tastes differ but at that time, let’s say, she was a nice presence. I’m not referring to the time she was on TopPop in the tight blue latex outfit pushing something on the song "Weekend". Weekend was Earth and Fire’s last big hit. You could wake me up for "Seasons", "Storm and Thunder", "Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight" and of course "Memories". All classics from home soil from the early 70s of the last century. The last LP was pressed in 1989.
Earth And Fire
Earth and Fire was a Dutch pop group from the seventies and eighties of the 20th century. The members came from Voorschoten, Voorburg and Leidschendam. The main band members were Jerney Kaagman (vocals) and the twin brothers Gerard (keyboards) and Chris Koerts (guitar). Other band members changed over time. Drummer on the first two hits was Cees Kalis, who then chose a career in education and was replaced by Ton van der Kleij. Bassist Hans Ziech was replaced in 1974 by Theo Hurts, who was succeeded in 1978 by Bert Ruiter.
With the single Weekend, Earth & Fire scored a major international hit. In the Netherlands alone, more than 100,000 singles were sold and it was number one on the National Hit Parade for seven weeks.
On 3 February 2017, exactly 50 years after the founding of Opus Gainfull, the remaining band members gathered in The Hague for the presentation and release of Memories, the collected works of Earth & Fire in nine albums and a bonus CD.
On 17 October 2012, Kaagman announced in an interview with Weekend that she had Parkinson’s disease. She said that everyone who had speculated about her alleged use of Botox should apologise. She said she wanted to be an example for others by openly admitting her illness.
