Coldplay

On 24 June 2016, Coldplay performed at the Amsterdam Arena and we were there. Now, I'm not much of a fan of the (now) Johan Cruijff Arena but you simply don't get a band of that calibre in a small venue anymore. What Coldplay singer Chris Martin achieved that evening was incredible. Chris made the arena feel like an intimate venue and it seemed as if he made personal contact with everyone. The sound was top-notch that evening, which the arena is not really known for. All in all, a concert that ranks in my personal top 10.

Coldplay

Coldplay is a British pop band formed in London in 1996. The members are singer Chris Martin, guitarist Jon Buckland, drummer Will Champion and bassist Guy Berryman.

In the beginning, Coldplay was compared to other artists and bands, including Radiohead, U2 and Travis. The band broke through with the single Yellow, followed by their debut album Parachutes (2000). A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), their second album, marked their definitive breakthrough. The album also won several awards. In 2005, the album X&Y was released, which reached number one in sixteen countries. The fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, was produced together with Brian Eno and received multiple Grammys. Their fifth album Mylo Xyloto was again produced by Eno. Hits by Coldplay include Speed of Sound, Clocks, Yellow, Viva La Vida, The Scientist, Fix You, Paradise and Magic.

In 1996, Chris Martin met Jonny Buckland during the introduction week at University College London. Together they tried to form a band, where they met Will Champion and Guy Berryman at university. Together they made their first attempt. Martin began writing lyrics with Buckland, Berryman played bass guitar and Champion started drumming. The band, called Starfish, mainly played in English pubs. The band also briefly had an alter ego as Pectoralz, a boy band intended purely as a joke. When the members were about to have their first bigger performance, they switched to the name Coldplay. At the time, Martin had a friend, Tim Crompton, now frontman of the English band the High Wire, whose band Coldplay was about to disband. This band had the name Coldplay from a poetry collection and Martin decided to take over the name after that band stopped. In 1998, the band was indeed called Coldplay.

Shortly after meeting at the London university, the four students became friends and shared their passion for music. The band that emerged had the following members: Chris Martin (lyricist, vocals, piano, guitar), Jonny Buckland (lyricist, lead guitarist), Guy Berryman (bassist) and Will Champion (drummer, after previously playing guitar and piano).
