Bruce hasn't caught me yet. I don't know why not? There are songs I like, even good ones, but those happen to be the very songs the real Springsteen fans don't like (too commercial). I've seen him perform live once and I was definitely deeply impressed by his boundless energy. He just starts and doesn't stop. You get your money's worth. The man loves his work, his music, and certainly his fans!
Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen (23 September 1949) is an American rock singer, guitarist and songwriter. His nickname is The Boss. Douglas Frederick, Springsteen's father, was of Irish-Dutch descent and his mother (Adele Ann Zerilli) was of Italian heritage. From the 1960s, Springsteen played in several bands, including The Castiles, Steel Mill and Dr. Zoom and The Sonic Boom. In 1972, the singer was discovered by John Hammond, who had previously discovered Bob Dylan. That same year, Springsteen signed a contract with Hammond's employer Columbia Records. His first album, Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ, was released in January 1973 and was named after the seaside resort Asbury Park, where he performed in small clubs at the start of his career. In September 1973, his second album The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle was released. Although these albums initially did not catch on, they went platinum years later.
Springsteen himself is a great admirer of actor and singer Elvis Presley. He said in an interview: "There have been a lot of tough guys. There have been pretenders and there have been contenders, but there is only one king."
Springsteen broke through with his third album: Born to Run (August 1975). By then, Springsteen (in 1974) had changed the lineup of his band, the E Street Band. The lineup was: Clarence Clemons on saxophone, Steve Van Zandt on guitar, Danny Federici on organ, Roy Bittan on piano, Garry Tallent on bass guitar and Max Weinberg on drums. In 1975, Springsteen visited Europe for the first time and also performed in Amsterdam (RAI) on 23 November.
In the spring of 2019, three singles were released: Hello Sunshine, There Goes My Miracle and Tucson Train. These three songs are on the album Western Stars, which was released on 14 June 2019. At the end of 2019, Springsteen stated in an interview that he was working on a new album with the E Street Band. This album is expected to be released in 2020.
Top 2000
In the 23rd edition of the Top 2000, Bruce is listed as follows:
Sunday Morning Classics: Born In The USA
On 9 August 2020, Bruce was a "guest" on our Sunday Morning Classics with his album Born In The USA
Born in the USA marked the peak of commercial success for Bruce Springsteen. The album spent a record 84 consecutive weeks in the Billboard Top 10. Born in the USA contains traditional, story-driven songs with contemporary production and entertaining melodies, making it the best album of 1984.
In total, Springsteen wrote an estimated 70 songs for the album, of which 12 made the final cut.
The title track deals with the cruel mistreatment of Vietnam veterans upon their return home. "Cover Me" is a bright pop song, albeit warmer than the opener. Springsteen originally wrote the song for Donna Summer, but was encouraged by his manager, Jon Landau, to include it on the album.
"Darlington County" is a down-home track somewhat influenced by Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was recorded in the spring of 1982 and is named after a real county in South Carolina. “Working on the Highway” is the weakest song on the first side, almost a cheap attempt at rockabilly. On the other hand, "Downbound Train" is an excellent dark folk song with the added bonus of a spooky organ in the background. The song is a melancholic lament for a lost spouse with vivid imagery throughout.
"I'm On Fire" is a short but powerful ballad. "No Surrender" is a cheerful youth anthem that was originally cut from the album but restored at the insistence of guitarist Steven Van Zandt. "Bobby Jean" is the most underrated Springsteen song, with a great melody and romantic lyrics.
"I'm Goin' Down" features Clemons' second sax solo and, like "Working on the Highway," is completely retro.
"Glory Days" is a catchy pop song with narrative lyrics. "Dancing In the Dark" was the last song recorded for the album. The melody and arrangement are masterful.
The album closes with the folk ballad "My Hometown," a dark look at the scenes and characters in "Born to Run" a decade earlier. While discussing riots and unemployment, the serene background choir in the final verse gives a sense of hope through despair. This last song was also the album's final Top 10 single.
