Aerosmith

Aerosmith was founded in the early 1970s. In its early years, the band struggled to gain a foothold in Europe due to various personal problems. The excessive drug use of singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry earned them the distinctive nickname of Toxic Twins. From the album Draw The Line (1977), things went downhill for Steven Tyler due to his drug addiction.

Comeback

The turning point came in 1984, when Aerosmith made yet another grand comeback in America with the original lineup with the album Permanent Vacation. In the Netherlands, Aerosmith broke through when they recorded a remake of the song 'Walk This Way' with Run DMC in 1986.

Things also improved personally for the band. Both Tyler and Perry were definitively off drugs and seemed to have turned their lives around. Around 1993, Aerosmith signed a deal with record company Sony worth 30 million dollars and 22 percent royalties for just four albums. A golden move, as proved by the release of the album Get A Grip in 1994.

Videos

Aerosmith is also known for the striking music videos that accompanied their songs. The singles 'Cryin', 'Amazing' and 'Crazy' were accompanied by interconnected videos, in which blonde Alicia Silverstone played a prominent role. She even launched a Hollywood career from the Aerosmith clips. (Silverstone can be seen in the teen film Clueless and the thriller Crush). In the video for 'Crazy', Steve Tyler's daughter, Liv, also played a role. She also went on to Hollywood. She received good reviews for her lead role in Stealing Beauty.

The Michael Bay film Armageddon (1998), for which Aerosmith recorded the worldwide hit 'I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing', also featured Liv in one of the lead roles. After the success of Get A Grip, Aerosmith released the compilation album Big Ones. This also went platinum. The 1997 album Nine Lives scored with the single 'Pink', among others. Aerosmith is still touring. For example, the band played in June 2010 at the Goffertpark in Nijmegen.

Top 2000

In the 23rd edition of the Top 2000, Aerosmith has three entries:

Sunday Morning Classic: Aerosmith

On Sunday 3 April 2022, the men of Aerosmith were our guests as Sunday Morning Classic with their debut album "Aerosmith" from 1973.

Like some other albums from the band's early years, this album was produced in all its rawness, as it should be: no technical improvements. Take two guitars, bass, drums and a raw voice and a rock band is born. Although the songwriting qualities of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are not yet optimal and it is clear that this is a first effort (Steven Tyler deliberately sang with a different voice because he was insecure about his own voice), this is still a good album with nice bluesy hard rock. Every track is highly recommended, but the highlights are of course the classics Dream On and Mama Kin.
